Way of the Cross with a difference

During Lent 2017, two St John’s parishioners Jaromir and Magda Kruczynski chose to celebrate 10 years of marriage by embarking on a very challenging Way of the Cross. Last year Jaromir had walked the EDK on his own but this year, marking their 10th wedding anniversary, Jaromir asked Magda if she would walk together and she said “Yes!”

The couple walked for 30 miles, from Milngavie to Helensbourgh, taking part in the Extreme Way of the Cross. It started with Holy Mass at 7pm in St Simon’s in Glasgow when each of the participants received a personal blessing from the priest. From St Simon’s they took the train to Milngavie, and then at 9pm they started out on Way of the Cross.

“We stopped for each Station of the Cross,” said Jaromir, “and someone read aloud a text for meditation. The group consisted of just over 30 people and we all walked in silence. For me first 20km was okay but after 30km when physical resources were near zero – the power of prayer and spiritual strength help to overcome crisis, accept the pain and keep going forward. Jesus knew that at the end he will die – innocent – for us.”

“It helped us to understand better what Jesus did for us. We knew that, later on we will get home, get a hot shower and some sleep. Going through this difficult road, the Way of the Cross together with my wife, Magda, we learned that life might be hard, difficult and through the darkness, but doing it together brings happiness and trust into marriage.”
